Planning a wedding comes with many surprises, and for Jamie and Larson, an unexpected February rainstorm became part of their beautiful love story. As a Savannah wedding photographer, I always remind my couples that some of the most magical, editorial, and candid moments come from the unexpected. Their wedding, held the day after Valentine’s Day at Soho South Café, was a perfect example of how to turn a rainy day into a romantic and unforgettable celebration.
Jamie and Larson envisioned an intimate yet stylish celebration in downtown Savannah. Soho South, with its industrial-chic charm and cozy ambiance, provided the perfect backdrop. The rain only added to the romantic atmosphere, giving us a chance to get creative with locations while capturing their day in a luxurious, in-the-moment style.
When the rain started coming down, we pivoted to Madison Square, a nearby gem with a beautiful covered porch area. This allowed us to still capture the iconic charm of Savannah while keeping the wedding party dry. The soft, natural light and misty air created a dreamy editorial feel, turning what could have been a challenge into a unique photographic opportunity.
Instead of traditional outdoor portraits, Jamie and Larson’s wedding party and family photos took place inside their elegant hotel lobby. The warm tones, grand architecture, and moody lighting gave a timeless, luxury feel to their group portraits. As a destination wedding photographer in the Southeast, I love finding the perfect balance between structured, editorial-style portraits and the candid, in-the-moment emotions that make a wedding day so special.
The low light and indoor settings gave us the perfect opportunity to lean into flash photography, creating a modern and stylish look for their reception. From champagne toasts to a lively dance floor, the energy of the night was captured with vibrant, dynamic images that felt like something out of a high-end fashion editorial.
If you’re planning a wedding in Savannah—or anywhere with unpredictable weather—it’s always a good idea to embrace the unexpected. Here are a few tips for making the most of a rainy wedding day:
Soho South was the perfect choice for Jamie and Larson because it offered both indoor elegance and charming covered areas nearby. When selecting a venue, consider places with covered porches, grand lobbies, or beautiful indoor lighting.
Clear umbrellas, chic trench coats, and elegant boots can make for stunning, unique bridal portraits. Instead of viewing rain as an obstacle, treat it as an opportunity to add personality and editorial flair to your photos.
A professional luxury wedding photographer knows how to pivot, find the best lighting, and make even the rainiest day feel magical. Whether it’s using reflections from wet cobblestone streets or playing with flash photography for a high-fashion reception look, the right photographer will turn the unexpected into something extraordinary.
At the end of the day, Jamie and Larson’s wedding was about love, celebration, and the joy of being surrounded by family and friends. The rain only added to the intimacy and romance, creating unforgettable memories and stunning, editorial-style images they will cherish forever.
